I don't know anything about Rep. Mary Miller.
So, I’m going to guess a few things about her.
She's a Republican with no education in history, theology, or religion.
.
Republican leaders are allergic to research and abstract thought; they aren't reflective or contemplative, and they demonstrate no desire to know more about the world, be inclusive, or open-minded. The 2025 version of the GOP, especially members of the House, rewards the likes of the Boebert girl and the Taylor-Greene genius, who all seem to be time-sharing the same defective brain. Ms. Miller seems to be racing them to the bottom.
.
She flunked 8th-grade civics. If she went to college, she didn't major in American history or American government. I'd be surprised if she even took freshman American history, which isn't required for a lot of majors. How do I know this? Even a freshman American history student would know that saying America was founded as a Christian nation is poppycock. As John Adams adamantly insisted.
.
In an 1820 letter to his grandson, Adams praised providence for giving people self-love which "makes all men happy in their own religion, whatever it may be—the Mahometan is confident that he shall go to paradise, the Hindoo to Brahma, the Hebrew to Abraham's bosom, the Calvinist is sure that he is one of the elect, the churchman has a sure and certain hope of a resurrection to life eternal; the North American Indian expects to go to a level country without swamps or mountains—where grand and beautiful rivers meander through vast prairies and lofty forests abounding with deer, elk, and buffalo, Indian corn kidney beans, pumpkins and squashes growing spontaneously—and who can say that this is not all as it should be?"
"But," he said, "I wish that all had a little more charity for those who differ from them."
.
Further, Adams said, "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims],—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Mohammedan] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."
Representative Miller hasn't read the Constitution. There is no reference to God, Jesus, Christianity, or the Bible in the Constitution. And the only mention of religion is to declare that the government would not establish one, nor would it prohibit religion from being practiced. So, any prayer given in the Chambers of Congress would be acceptable according to the Constitution.
.
Ms. Miller is also ignorant of religion. The man in the photograph isn't Muslim. He is Sikh. In fact, he is a Sikh Chaplain.
.
When you don't know American history, or the Constitution, or the way the government works, you say all manner of stupid things. And if your audience is likewise stupid, you get away with it. But surely someone from her party set her straight, right?
Right on, Tony!
